Nike

Undoubtedly, the first serious realization that opened the way to a career for Konieczny was the monument "To the Heroes of Warsaw - Nike Warszawska". When in December 1959 the competition for this symbol of Warsaw martyrdom was decided to be erected the artist at that time had already designed a monument to Chopin, had made a project for those murdered in Oświęcim and several projects from his student days. Out of about 200 works sent to the competition by artists from around the world, the first place was awarded to the work bearing the "Nike-Syrena" emblem.

- They keep asking me about the idea, - Konieczny once said. - Where, when and why Nike. Except that the idea was not the most important thing in all of this. Yes, I had to reach for my own sensitivity and imagination, but I also couldn't create Nike based solely on this. First, we had to think about many things related to our history and cultural tradition. To understand and rediscover for ourselves everything that is most characteristic, and unique for us Poles.

Three moments decided on the idea for a monument-symbol: reflections and thoughts on Polish Romanticism, the first contact of a young boy with Warsaw destroyed in ruins right after the war, and a coincidence. One night, Konieczny heard the melody of a song called Warszawianka, he associated it with Nike, in whose hands he placed a sword raised high - a sign of relentless fight and victory. The opening of the monument took place on July 21, 1964. It was the first such huge monumental realization in Poland, made in bronze. "Nike" weighed 10 tons.

My name - said the artist - I hid in hair of the sculpture of "Nike". I am aware that I created it. But I also know that "Nike" is no longer mine. Just like Zygmunt's Column, like the Royal Castle, "Nike" became the property of the whole Nation
